Our brief was to design a dwelling that would occupy a small site over existing garaging whilst being respectful to the buildings behind the site that have fine views down the River Dart.

The timber framed, single aspect, one storey building appears ‘lightweight’ finished with timber cladding and a natural slate roof that sits in contrast with the heavy stone base provided by the existing garage structure beneath.

Architecturally the existing stone garaging needed to remain the dominant feature and stone pillars to the front which set out sections of railing previously now provide the rhythm for balconies and glazed doors to the new accommodation.

The complexities of no actual ground connections on site were not easy to overcome and all drainage is contained in slimline tanks which sit in the roof space of the garages and is pumped to mains sewers which run behind the houses above.
