This new 4 bedroom dwelling was designed by BBH along with two other plots immediately adjacent which together formed part of “phase 2” of the development of the Lower Mead Estate land in Thurlestone.
The design is of a split level with access into a mid level atrium area providing a visual link between front and back gardens and allowing views to the south from the immediate entrance to the dwelling. The apparent architectural break in the built form and a notion of space flowing from one side of the property to the other is strengthened by the use of a natural stone wall which curves through the centre of the building, accentuating the entrance and helping to describe external terrace spaces which also then become raised gardens at first floor level. The stone feature reflects the use of stone within the plot boundary and entrance road walls and helps anchor all the lighter weight elements of building, more firmly into their immediate context.
The dwelling has been constructed to a high specification using “Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3” as a guide including “green” technologies and sustainable solutions where necessary in order to perform as efficiently and cost effectively as possible in terms of ongoing maintenance and running costs.
