Mr & Mrs A Wall
The brief was to convert the Grade II listed warehouse into a two bedroom apartment at first floor level and to change the use of the ground floor to function as a restaurant.
Due to the nature of the works we had to work closely with the conservation officer in order to provide a positive response to its character and the urban context. In response our proposal left little intervention to the historic fabric and opened up the blocked existing historic openings. The infill detailing of the existing openings is key to the buildings industrial perception, thus new panels of timber and glass have been detailed to remove the perception of domestic fenestration. Through simple detailing and a selective pallet of new materials the design provides a contrast with the historically important structure.
Architecturally a definitive entrance was required; the galvanized steel and glass canopy provides an element of shelter to the restaurant whilst complimenting the historic fabric.
