We were commissioned to design a new dwelling to replace an existing 1950’s bungalow on a demanding site in Dittisham where it was important to consider the surrounding properties, by being respectful to their views over the River Dart valley. The architectural approach is simple yet contemporary, presenting an overall volume that sits well within the context of the landscaped site.
A simple palette of local materials have been carefully selected with a natural stone base and lighter render and cladding over which have helped maintain the appearance of a single storey dwelling as had existed on the site previously.
Sustainability has been an aspect our client has been keen to embrace. As well as the dwelling being insulated and detailed to the highest standards, it takes advantage of the southerly aspect by utilising two large solar panels to provide the property’s hot water, working alongside an air-source heat pump for those less sunny days to ensure the heating system is sustainable all year round. A heat recovery ventilation system combined with construction that exemplifies air tightness and insulation ensures that the internal environment is maintained as required with no use of fossil fuels. Finally, rain water and grey water recycling systems are used for the flushing of WC’s and watering of the grounds.
