OVERSEAS HOUSE, STOKE FLEMING
Overseas House, Stoke Fleming
Mr & Mrs Plumb
D & B Duffy Building Contractors Ltd
The project involved the demolition of an existing dwelling, on the edge of the village of Stoke Fleming, and construction of a new family house that took full advantage of the cliff top location and stunning sea views. The house was designed, through positioning and window arrangement, to hide the views when entering the site.
A visitor then goes through the front door and the view is suddenly opened up through a double-height glazed atrium. The use of balconies and a cantilevered terrace on the sea-side elevation takes full advantage of the location. Bedroom accommodation is on the first floor, including a master suite with balcony, dressing area, en-suite and study (with its own private terrace). A smaller, more cosy lounge, with open fireplace, provides a snug alternative to the more open kitchen / family room.
The garden was completely re-landscaped, to the designs of a landscape architect. The existing external pool, at the bottom of the garden, was also rebuilt with new pool house constructed. BBH oversaw the contract and brought together a team of consultants and sub-contractors including lighting designers, home automation suppliers and pool installers.
Much work was done at a planning stage to ensure that the design would be acceptable to the planning departments and local residents. A consultation process was carried out with neighbours and the planning officer. The use of traditional materials, such as timber cladding, slate, natural stone (reclaimed during the demolition of the existing building) and render was counterpointed with zinc roofing and cladding details.
