DARTMOUTH OUTDOOR THEATRE
Dartmouth Outdoor Theatre
The Inn Theatre Company
BBH Were approached by the Inn Theatre Company with a view to exploring the potential of the natural amphitheatre at Sugary Cove for outdoor performance and theatre.
With a strong following building for their outdoor performances currently held at Dartmouth Castle this site offered real potential to provide Dartmouth with a similar venue to the Minac Theatre in Cornwall.
The natural bowl of the landscape lends itself well to a semi permanent stage structure set its base with then the natural cliffs and sea views as a panoramic natural back drop.
The challenge was to try and incorporate all the requirements for seating and staging but in a natural setting and so that for times of year when not in use it would remain suitable in its setting and still offer seating and picnic areas for enjoyment by visitors and walkers alike.
The proposal sought to include a small building which would be more permanent and could well double as a cafe and information area when not in use as a sound room, wc facilities and ticket office on performance nights. This was proposed as a building set into the hillside with a log timber frontage that would leave as minimal an impact on the natural setting as we could.
